Devi Rao, Class of 2001, represents so much more than just her clients

September 18, 2017

In the short 16 years since she left Rio Mesa, Devi Rao has not only risen to the top of her profession, but has done so in a way that has benefitted countless individuals less fortunate than herself.

After her graduation from Rio Mesa in 2001, Devi majored in history at U.C. Berkeley, graduating summa cum laude, and spending a year abroad in Budapest, Hungary. Her developing interest in social issues and civil rights then led her to Columbia Law School, where she received her J.D. and served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Columbia Law Review

After law school, Devi worked at the National Women's Law Center in Washington, D.C., where she focused on issues relating to bullying and harassment in schools.  She also served as a law clerk to M. Margaret McKeown on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Supreme Court

Devi is currently an associate at Jenner and Block, LLP, where she handles complex commercial litigation and civil and regulatory matters facing copyright owners in the music industry. She also has extensive experience with compliance and enforcement issues surrounding Title IX and works with schools to ensure their sexual assault and harassment policies and procedures are compliant.

On top of all this, Devi volunteers her time in pro bono practice, helping those who can’t afford legal representation in Landlord-Tenant court, and representing clients such as the American Medical Association and the National Congress of American Indians.

Devi currently works and lives in Washington, D.C. with her husband, dog, and one-year-old daughter.
